Learn About Gout
It usually presents with a sudden onset as a red, hot swollen joint that is very painful to the touch. The metatarsal phalangeal joint at the base of the big toe is the most commonly affected area although it can affect other joints of the foot including the ankle. Attacks of gouty arthritis are extremely painful. Diets heavy in red meat, shellfish, and alcohol have been linked to gout. Medication as well as the body’s over production of uric acid or under excretion of uric acid can also contribute to the onset of gout.
Symptoms Of Gout
The main symptom of gout is waking up in the middle of the night with an acute throbbing pain around the big toe and top of the foot. The pain lasts for several days or even weeks before subsiding. It is common to have several attacks throughout the year.
The acute inflammatory symptoms and pain from Gout can be decreased quickly with prescription medications and steroid injections. Long term uric acid control can be obtained from prescription medications and diet control. By controlling the blood uric acid levels this will prevent future flare ups of gout.
